2013 Spring Update

Spring 2013 Chapter Report
Mississippi Chapter of AATG
March 11, 2013

The Mississippi Chapter of AATG is an active chapter ready to support workshops and programs to suit teachers’ needs. We are working to establish a more active presence on-line, to make it easier for us to contact one another. We have a new interactive website at https://msaatg.wordpress.com/. I have kept our activities up to date on our new website and on the website for the Mississippi Foreign Language Association: http://www.msfla.org/. The National Office website is now linked to our new website as well. We have also kept our activities updated in the Mississippi Language Crusader. We met at the Mississippi Foreign Language Association Conference in Lake Tiak O’Khata on November 10, 2012 and elected new officers. As a chapter, we are working on outreach. In addition to the creation of our new website, last year, students in the Mississippi State University German Club traveled to Columbus to teach German to elementary and middle school students on Friday afternoons. This was exciting for the students who are learning the language to have an opportunity to share their new competences, and it was exciting for the children, who no doubt enjoyed the attention from college students. I believe it also made an impression on the surrounding community, on parents and teachers, who perhaps had not previously considered German instruction for their children and pupils. I have been notified of funding for this project for the coming semester, and professors and students at Ole Miss have expressed interest in starting such a program there as well. We also have in mind more activities where we actually reach out beyond the virtual world, into the real one, by tagging along with the efforts of those working with M-FLA to create local workshops in French and Spanish language teaching. Last fall, we amended our constitution and published the changes in this forum. During our meeting in November at this year’s M-FLA conference, we had a final vote on them.

Mit freundlichen Gruessen!
